One little observation on yesterday’s game: the officiating

When refs blow a call, or are perceived to have blown a call, boards like this light up. The Cats were fortunate yesterday to draw Jerry McGinn and his crew. To me, he is all the best a ref brings to the field: even tempered, crisp in execution, consistent, and always in position. It is a real pleasure to watch him and his crew work a game, and yesterday’s was no exception.

Substitutions

Anyone notice NU having to use a time out because Wisconsin's lineman was "confused" as to whether he was suppose to be in or out when they were substituting under the equal opportunity to substitute rule? The lineman ran out to the middle of the field after most of the substitutions had already gone in, looked around confused and then headed off. Literally NU sat there waiting for what seemed like 10 seconds or more. Coach Braun just sarcastically shook his head as if this was a blatant abuse of the rule - which it was although perhaps legal. What if this game had come down to the wire and that time out was critical? That rule needs to be refined.

How David Braun’s first year stacks up

First year head coaches have not fared very well in NU’s long history of collegiate football. The last time a first year coach won more than 4 games was 1903, when Walter McCornack’s team was 10-1-3, with the only loss coming at the hands Pop Warner’s Carlisle team, 28-0. That loss was less than a decade before Jim Thorpe starred at Carlisle. The Cats record in 1903 included wins over several high school teams, the NU alumni, and the fighting dentures of Chicago Dental.
Notable first year coaches with four wins include:
Fitz (2006, 4-8)
Francis Peay (1986, 4-7)
John Pont (1973, 4-7)
Ara Parseghian (1956, 4-4-1, the most recent .500 record for a first year)
Pappy Waldorf (1935, 4-3-1, the most recent winning first year)
Dick Hanley (1927, 4-4)

Gary Barnett won 3 in his first year (1992).
Dennis Green and Lou Saban were winless.

Two wins vaults Braun past everyone in 120 years as far as wins (21 coaches)
Three wins locks him with Ara for regular season winning percentage.

I hope David starts a march toward the NU record book with a win over Nebraska next Saturday!

NU @ UW Prediction Thread

NU by some measures outperfomed Iowa last week despite losing 10-7 on a late field goal at Wrigley Field. It seems clear this team is significantly better than last year's, especially on defense, but bowl eligibility is still elusive.

The Cats get another chance in Camp Randal on Saturday. That's not as daunting a propect as it has been in past years. The Badgers beat a solid Rutgers team that beat the Cats in the season opener, but were notably less successful defending against Iowa's offense and lost to then-two-win Indiana last week. The Cats have a fighter's chance and this being the B1G West, expect another rock fight.

3 Reasons I'm LOVING NU Now (administration notwithstanding)

ha vowed in August not to give any more $. Things have changed.

1. Great win vs. Dayton CC has figured it out
2. Shocking win vs Wisconsin. Hire da man he earned it
3. My daughter just got into grad school at Northwestern.

They will be getting LOTS of my money (most of it tuition but yeah some donations too)

Ohio State- Michigan State game

Ohio State is drubbing MSU. Ohio State has so much talent. I am looking forward to their game with Michigan, it should be an instant classic though I feel it will be diminished without Hardball on the sideline.

Can’t help but draw a comparison between NU and MSU’s seasons. Both schools were saddled with costly long-term hc contracts, both were terminated for cause and now facing lawsuits from different parties. I just seems that our program has fared better this season under Braun compared to the disaster at MSU.

Also, always great to see PSU/Franklin lose. I liked how Michigan’s offense went large and pounded the PSU defense for the win. Not much of a Harball fan but also recognize he’s done well at the college level starting here at USD, at Stanford and now at Michigan. Just wonder how his suspension will impact his desire to remain at the college level or if he will return coaching pro.

Best NU hoopster of all time

Any real discussion of single greatest NU hoopster of all time begins and ends with just three names: McKinney, Shurna, and Eschmeyer. Sure, there are others in the ballpark, but I doubt "Other" would get many votes to overcome those top three.

My question is: what does Buie have to do to break into that group this year? Obviously back-to-back NCAA berths is a must, but does he need to win the Big Ten? Go to the Final Four? Can he?
