Why do the WRs drop balls?
Why do QBs make the same mistake over & over?
Why do OL miss blocks/assignments?
On & on....
The answer is simple......Because THEY CAN.
If you continue to make mistakes & you continue to play, a significant part of the drive for excellence is lost. At places like Ohio St., Alabama, Florida St., etc., if you make mistakes, there is another guy chomping at the bit to fill your role. Also, there are coaches happy & willing to make that change. Part of that is, no question, strong talent in the 2 to 3 deep.
So, what can happen at NU?
1. Try to recruit a 2-3 deep as good as anyone else (getting there, but still not there).
2. Have special coaches who have the intangible ability to get the most out of their players.
3. Have special players who have the ability to push themselves to excellence.

The '95 & '96 teams had special coaches & special players.

I don't know where the problem lies right now (coaches, players, injuries, etc.). Fitz, Phillips, the coaches & the players know. Some problems can be fixed in the locker room & practice field. I hope this is the case with this team. However, some can't be fixed until the off season. We'll see....
