One line of thinking is NU is hedging its bets that there may be football this fall, but it might be without fans. Rescheduling the Wrigley game to Ryan Field reduces the cost associated with playing to an empty stadium.

You can test all players before participating in a game, but having tens of thousands of fans is an impossible challenge without a vaccine available.

So the optimistic scenario is a 2020 season without fans, but games on TV. Schools get revenue they desperately need, fans get the games but not in person, players get to play.

The next question is what percentage of fans return in 2021 or do you lose a good portion of your fan base?

I think the main way you'd lose fans for 2021 would be requiring fans to purchase their 2020 seats in order to keep their location for 2021 (assuming there are games with fans in attendance in 2020 - a big assumption).

What the school can do is rather than refund just give the season ticket holders tickets for the following year. Since there would be 5 conference home games, pretty good deal as tickets for this year were cheaper because of only three conference home games and 6 total.

If they did not allow fans to go, they would likely have to refund. Most season ticket holders have likely already paid for them. But instead they can offer a choice between a refund or let them use it for next years tickets
