Yeah the West side was what it should be, I'm not sure what the deal is with the East side students, especially given the great example they had across the court. At first I thought it was because MD was shooting at the west side in the 1st half, but they never got that loud in the 2nd either...I was in 101, so had great views of the students really giving it to Queen, made my heart all warm and fuzzy.

2-4. Big win. Need to get to 11-9.

So all those decades of frustration of NU losing - our success now is just that we have way more talent? (Buie developed into our best player ever, of course - but imagine if he could have shot a pull-up jumper as well as a floater)?
Buie was an All-American level guard, he could go toe-to-toe with anyone in the country. Audige? Arguably the best perimeter defender in the nation. Then there's Barnhizer, the most complete player I’ve seen in a Northwestern uniform. Berry, when he's healthy, is one of the purest shooters in the Big Ten, can light it up from anywhere. Langborg was a darn good scorer as well. And don’t sleep on Martinelli has got a natural touch around the basket and a nose for the ball that you can’t coach. Now, I’m not sitting here telling you NU is the most talented team in the Big Ten, but there’s been some serious talent on this roster these last few years. You don’t rack up wins like we have over the last couple years without talent, period. It’s a different level of basketball under Collins and different caliber of players brought to campus.

Fitzmorris

Without stepping on PWB's toes:

1st half
Fitzmorris was -4 in his first segment, with Reese going 0-1 and scoring 2 points,
+4 in his second segment, with Reese going 2-3 and scoring 4 points.
Barkley was +2 in his 2 minutes with Reese going 0-1 and scoring 2 points.

2nd half
Fitzmorris was -2 with Reese going 1-1 for 2 points
Then from the start of the 13-0 run until he was subbed out, Fitz was +10 with Reese going 0-1 for 0 points.
His last segment, he was -3 with Reese taking no shots.

2-4. Big win. Need to get to 11-9.

You dont finish in the top 3 of the B1G in back to back years without having at least top half of conference talent. Pundits don’t know jack about NU.

Barkley got some deserved applause when he came in and slowed things down after Fitzmorris was playing matador defense against Reese. Very glad that Fitzmorris picked it up in the 2nd half and got a number of blocked shots. In a 5-minute sequence from 14:50 to 9:51 in the second half, he got:

Offensive rebound leading to a Martinelli 3 to tie the game at 46 and kick off the 13-0 run
The slightest of touches on a Gillespie jump shot to alter it
A block on a Queen jumper
Offensive rebound leading to a Barnhizer 3 to cap the 13-0 run
A block on a Rice layup
Sub out to rapturous applause
That was a fantastic sequence. Hopefully it means the game is slowing down a bit for him.

Blake Barkley looked like the cave man in Quest for Fire out there.

Wildside

Thought I’d re-up this thread. Wildside was great last night. Maybe not the peak form of the last two years, but a huge improvement from the Michigan game. Got into the freshman Queen’s head a little, and the “Angel’s better” chant to Julian Reese was funny. Could have used a little more free-throw disruption — Maryland was something like 19-for-22 from the line. Keep it up, kids!
6/10 Willies from me for the game (for reference, Michigan State would have been a 4/10 on the Willie scale and the Illinois game a 7/10). The Queen stuff was really good.

Much funnier and edgier, with some room for improvement. Kudos in particular to the West stands. 2nd half and OT were trending toward 8/10 Willie’s. Keep up that vibe for the full game and we are in business.

Keep it up for Miller Kopp’s alma mater!

Fitzmorris

He's more athletic than I expected. Not a high flyer by any stretch, but he has more juice in those shoes than I thought he did. On the offensive end, he does a pretty nice job of keeping balls alive with tipping missed shots out in hopes that a teammate can grab it, but brings pretty much nothing else on that end of the floor. On defense, he bites on shot fakes way too hard and gets stuck in the air a lot, but he brings a lot of energy and works really hard. He brings a type of energy that has value.

He's not a guy that should be getting a lot of minutes, but has shown he can be a guy that deserves some minutes. That's important in a league with a lot of big teams that will draw fouls from Nicholson and Hunger (two guys who seem to get in foul trouble often). Having another big man option is important. He's also someone you can toss in on nights when maybe Nicholson is off or not bringing any energy, which seems to happen from time to time.

Overall, for the role he plays, I've been pretty happy with what he has shown the last two games. A pretty limited player, but understands what his role is and embraces it.
Luke has really struggled offensively this year. Unless that changes, I don’t think he should get many minutes. I don’t know if we have the luxury at this point of allowing him to play through his struggles until he regains some confidence. He offers no rim protection. None.

I didn't mind the Blake Barkley minutes either. Throwing him in showed the appropriate amount of desperation during an absolute must-win.

There is an underlying belief by Maryland fans that they should be an elite program and win all but the bluest of blueblood games. The truth is the history is good but not that good, particularly in the last decade - but hope springs eternal. Losing the last three to NU? Big time unacceptable. However, I don't think Willard is on the hot seat. They had a great class and have a ton of talent.
Maryland got screwed by Covid, they tied for the Big Ten title that year and were poised to be a top-4 seed before the tourney was canceled. Turgeon only lasted one more year after that. But you're right, they haven't had a nationally relevant team since Melo Trimble was there in the mid-2010s when they first joined the conference.

Big Matt looked like he lost his dog when Nick’s buzzer beater went in.

I’ll preface by saying, as Chris likes to - it’s a 20 round fight. We took some hits in the first few and got whistle screwed out of one in happy valley. Nonetheless, we are where we are, and we stepped up to get back to 2-4.

Let’s not kid ourselves it’s still an uphill battle. But that was a HUGE and necessary win to keep us in the season. We needed to go 10-5 to get to 11-9 (which I think is what we need to make the tourney given the non conf schedule and results), now the equation is similar but going 9-5 is a lot lot better than needing to go 10-4. Next 5 games schedule remains very difficult. It’s brutal but we probably somehow need to pull 3-2 out of that.

In any event, it wasn’t pretty tonight, but it felt the whole way through like we were the better, smarter, more disciplined, more talented team. We nearly lost it at the FT line, but big players made big plays in the end. Ty Berry found his stroke toward the end of the first half. Martinelli converted on quirky leaners. Nicholson was a beast inside, and aside from FTs played a strong strong game especially on D. Leach was effective as PG against the press. Brooks just did Brooks things, he looked back to his normal self. Nothing special just a ho him 20/10/5 night for him. Ciaravino brought energy. Windham hit a clutch 3. Fitzmorris got abused in the first half and then stepped back up for some huge minutes on D in the second half.

And then after all that, giving up a lead, physical battle the whole way through, Nick found the critical floater to get us the desperately needed W.

They may not paint pictures of it, but every conference W is huge. We need to defend home court.

Onto Michigan. Go Cats!
Agree with everything except that we were the more talented team. Imagine if we had Julian Reese or guards as fast as theirs…

CONFIRMED: Lakefront Temporary Stadium is a GO

The first thought I had after reading this was wouldn't it be great if the new stadium was ready - it won't be - but then I recalled that field hockey has special field needs so any old football turf field won't do. Then it also occurred to me that field hockey won't be drawing in tons of fans so Martin Field is a good fit.
Yes, field hockey has special needs. But this is the Lacrosse tournament, which can be played on the same turf as football and soccer.....

Seems to me that Jackson found another revenue source to defray the cost of the temporary facility while at the same time getting great publicity for the NU LAX program and the University. Well done, Mark.
