Game thread for Northwestern vs. Minnesota

I’ve never seen it, though I wish they had shown them on replay.
The only time I’ve seen defensive holding is a DL holding an OL who is trying to pull. I can’t imagine what it would have been on the goal line.

That's definitely targeting and I can't imagine what he was thinking when he did it.

Well that’s it for Uileihn. Who do we have to play LB behind him? Glad it’s not in the second half.

The good news is that Minnesota takes their time scoring so it shouldn’t look too ugly.

Now playing Declan Carr, the grad transfer from Drake, at LB. Pretty sad that we don’t even have a young guy worth getting some reps.
We have 85 full rides. 41 on O and 41 on D and 3 for specialists. Do the math. Depth is very difficult for everyone.

That's the stupidity of JON and Fitz. Clueless.

It would be nice if we could protect our qb’s. They are taking a pounding in the pocket. I hope Sullivan is ok, replay showed a hard hit to his helmet both by the player and the ground.

At least we won’t get skunked.

As bad as our defense has been, offense hasn't done any better with SIX yards rushing in the first half. Just a bad team all around.

“There’s explosive plays everywhere…”

That was an unfortunately astute assessment of our defense by Fleck.

I'm worried that Sully was concussed 2 weeks in a row. He might be done for the year or for life. The short happy life
Sully is a gamer and I hope that's not the case. Football is a brutal sport. We already saw Rowley retire this year, and Gordon is out for the season with his chronic shoulder injuries that threaten his career too.

I mean, people said they wanted a mobile quarterback.

When you base your offense around your QB running, this is forever a risk.

(Although this particular play was a passing play.)

Defense took a lot of criticism in the first half, but Minny had 6 possessions before running out the clock at end of half: Cats had four stops, and would hav had five except for the bogus PI call. While due to attrition I expect them to score 28 or so in the second half, the Cats are losing this game because Minny’s defense really controlled the game. Gopher D is good; Cat’s offense isn’t.

The run D is horrible though despite the score. The first 2 defensive series were a mirage, now they’re a total sieve. Although the offense is not much better. It’s a bad combo. If the offense goes down by more than a TD, game over, there’s no way they are going to make up that deficit.

I agree, though the Cats are fortunate to be facing a depleted Gopher offense.

It looks like Hilinski must step up his game for NU to have a chance In the second half. The Gopher run defense is stout.

Edit: I am…ummm…wow! So pure direct snaps to the RB for the rest of the game?
