Game thread: Northwestern vs. Minnesota

Northwestern (1-2, 0-1 Big Ten) hosts Minnesota (2-1, 1-0 Big Ten) tonight at Ryan Field. The stadium clock sets kickoff for 6:40 pm CT and the game will air on BTN.

This is Northwestern's Wildcat Welcome game, so the incoming freshman class will be in attendance. The Wildcats are 2-3 in their last five against the Gophers but have lost three straight stretching back to 2019.

Self-inflicted - how can we make so many penalties and mistakes?

Horrible game so far. So many penalties on both sides of the ball. Now a turnover and quick Minny score that seemed effortless. Really poor performance by the Cats so far. Think I will be switching to the Ohio State-ND game instead.

Why do our coaches always stick with the original starter. Bryant has just missed Henning twice for what would have been really long touchdowns by overthrowing. Can't we get someone else to play the quarterback position just for a couple series and see if there's something that can be generated

Complain about coaching all you want, but the reality is that the talent level is not high enough to compete at a Big Ten level. We are too slow, too weak, and too small. Better schemes and substitutions might help at the margins, but there is only so much coaching can do. The big takeaway is that the supposed improved recruiting over the last few years didn’t amount to anything.

Bryant missed on the two long passes, for instance.

D was doing OK but is gonna get work out of we don't move the ball.

Defense (our best tackler) was head on and could not stop the runner at the goal line. It’s the players.

Because if they can’t execute basic plays that are there to be made, what makes you think they can execute trick plays? The goal is to win football games, not to entertain you.

You’re an idiot who has no clue what he is watching. Gallagher was run over by his own teammates who were piling on from behind and ended up knocking him off the tackle. Watch the replay.

That last Minny td was emblematic of the d’s shortcomings. Had the Minny back stopped for a loss but couldn’t pull the back down as he wrestled away for the td. We are outgunned.
