Don't sleep on MSU

Bit of a big game tonight. I went back to the first game and looked through the lineups used on both sides, and looked at Izzo's rotation in recent games. When we last played them, reserve big man Jaxon Kohler had just returned from a foot injury and played one 3-minute segment in the second half when Izzo was looking for someone to spark them. Since then, he's gotten more playing time at the expense of starter Maddy Sissoko. In addition, 5-star freshman big man Xavier Booker, who only played 4 minutes against us mostly in garbage time, has gotten as many minutes in the past 2 games as he did in the previous 9. He's more of a stretch-4 than a traditional C, as he's a dangerous 3-point shooter, but has played about 5mpg at C in the past few games. The rest of Izzo's rotation has largely remained stable.

For us, Berry played 35 minutes in game 1, was our top scorer with 22 hitting 4-7 3s and grabbing 4 boards along with 2 steals. Huge, huge loss. We did outscore them 9-8 when he sat, for what it's worth (it's worth very little). Nicholson only played 10 minutes last time, mostly because he picked up 3 fouls in 2 and a half minutes in the 1st half, but they were impactful minutes. He was +4 against Sissoko in 4:46, +3 against Cooper in 3:42 and +4 against Hall in 1:19 to seal the game. We had our best offense and defense when he was playing, so that's a big loss. Hunger had an excellent game though, going +14 in nearly 19 minutes. Against Sissoko he was +9 in 10:11, even against Cooper in 6:32, and +5 against Kohler in 2:01. Scored 10 points, grabbed 3 offensive rebounds, had 1 block and 1 steal. Then there was Preston...in the first half, he finished even in 5:20, but in the 2nd half, it was not good. His first stint, he went -4 in 2:14 against Cooper, was taken out for Hunger who went +5 against Kohler, then put back in and went -5 against Kohler in 1:19. He didn't play the rest of the game, with Collins preferring to use Martinelli at the 5 when we got to garbage time in the last 2:36. Let's hope Hunger is up to the task again tonight.

Anyway, on to the scouting report:

Hoggard remains the driver of their offense, averaging 11.9 points, 5.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 40% from 3 at home in conference play. He's generally not the most efficient shooter, but can start to put up points if he gets to the line. Last game he scored 13 on 3-9 shooting, but was 5-5 from the FT line.

Walker is the starting SG, and had his best game of the conference season this year against us, scoring 27 points on 10-18 shooting including 4-7 from 3. He was their best player in the first game. He's struggled a bit from an efficiency standpoint the past seven games while still averaging 15.1 points and 2.4 assists per game, but remains a very good defender, recording at least 1 steal in the last 13 games, averaging 2/game.

Akins is the 3rd guard in the starting lineup, and he had an absolutely miserable game against us the first time around, finishing -29 in 30 non-garbage time minutes. In the first half, he sat for 3 and a half minutes, where MSU went +7, and then played the final 10 minutes of the first half, where we outscored MSU 28-9. In the second half, he sat for 4 minutes where MSU went +6, sandwiched in between the 13:30 he played where they went -7. Personally, he had a good game, scoring 13 points with 4 boards, but the team only scored 41 points in 48 possessions when he was playing. He remains a threat from 3, despite struggling the last 4 games (26.7%, 42.3% prior to that), and is also a good defender averaging 1.7 steals/game in the last 9.

The main backup to the 3 guards is Tre Holloman. In game 1, he played 20 non-garbage time minutes, 7 of them coming at PG. The team was much more effective when he was in for Akins, as he went -3 when in for Hoggard, -7 when he was in for Walker, and +10 when he was in for Akins. He averages 6 points/game at home, against only 2.7 on the road, so he will likely be a factor tonight. The other backup is freshman wing Coen Carr, who Izzo was forced into playing a lot against us at the 4 due to the ineffectiveness of Malik Hall, where he was -7 in 7:54, and +3 in 1:41 at wing. He oddly plays more like a big man despite being only 6'5", as he doesn't shoot 3s and rarely shoots at all unless it's a dunk. As long as we keep him away from the rim he shouldn't have a big impact.

Hall is the starter at the 4, and since he was shutout by us, he has been a monster. He's scored in double figures in 13 of 14 games, averaging 16.4 points, 6.4 boards and 1.9 assists per game, shooting 69.8% at the rim(!), 52.8% from midrange(!!), 55% from 3(!!!), and 80% from the FT line. His one weakness has been turnovers, as he's coughed it up 2.5 times/game in the last 4 games, so hopefully we can get some doubles on him without allowing him to kick it out to a shooter. I'm fairly certain he's not going to forget the game he had earlier this year, so I'm a bit worried.

The previously mentioned Xavier Booker plays the few minutes that Hall sits, and has scored 18 points over the last two games while shooting 37% from 3. He's a bit foul-prone, as he's a string bean freshman big man, but clearly the talent is starting to come out. Hopefully he doesn't continue tonight.

Lastly, the three-headed center of Sissoko, Cooper and Kohler. Taken together, they average 7.3 points, 9.8 boards and 1.4 blocks per game. Cooper is the most unheralded of the 3, but plays the most minutes. None of them have made a 3 this year. Izzo will start Sissoko, but will ride the hot hand during the game.

Ultimately, this will come down to how well we can weather the loss of 2 starters, how healed Langborg's ankle is, whether we can stop their guards from hitting 3s, and whether we can make our own 3s - MSU has only allowed teams to shoot 30% from 3 at home vs 40.5% on the road. It's senior night, and they start 4 seniors, so there will likely be some emotion involved, plus we have Boo Buie for one last matchup against MSU. Boo has scored 19+ points in 4 of his 7 matchups against the Spartans, including 20 points, 5 boards and 3 assists last year at the Breslin Center, giving us our first big win on the way to the tourney.

Schedule the rest of the way

I hope this chart looks ok. In case you were wondering who was playing, when, and where, among the teams competing with Northwestern for seeding in the Big Ten, here you go. I only included teams with seven or more wins, as I hope teams with six wins just aren't going to catch NU at this point.

OT: Izzo and son

The Athletic has a nice piece about Izzo and his adopted son, who (miraculously) scored his first MSU points last month. Watched the moment on Youtube...the bench and the crowd were ecstatic.

Have always liked the way Izzo carries himself, and more than ever after reading the story. (Here's the link, but probably paywalled.)

Some perspective from a Free Press story: Prior to Sunday's game, Izzo had gone scoreless in 43 appearances for the Spartans, missing all 13 shots he'd attempted while racking up seven fouls and five turnovers against just three assists

I’ll be on WGN's GN Sports show tonight

Almost forgot to post this! I'll be on the GN Sports show tonight at 10:30 pm CT on WGN. I recorded the interview yesterday with Chris Boden of WGN. They had my face on a massive video board behind him -- yikes.

We talked about hoop and the stadium situation. It was a pretty long interview, but I have no idea how much they'll use. Tune if you dare to see my giant mug on your TV -- though I'm sure they'll put it on social and on their website afterwards, too.

Matt Nicholson Disappointment

Is it just me or anyone else feel a bit disappointed by Matt this year. He comes into the year out of shape and didn’t seem to have worked on his game. This happens while the rest of the team has so committed to the team and its success by stepping to the plate.

Overall less effective than last year, letting his teammates down. Even getting benched at one point. Struggled with foul trouble.

Now suffers an injury at the worst time (I know the timing and injury isn’t his fault but can’t help but feel it just piles on the rest of it.).

This all happens while Buie and rest of the team have sacrificed so much for this year. If Matt had committed to fitness and improving and then dominating, this team would have been on an another level.

FB RECRUITING Defensive linemen standing out in Illinois 2025 class

I thought this was interesting. In Greg Smith's Midwest Storylines piece, he writes that Illinois is the state to recruit for D-linemen. Northwestern already has one in-state DL commit in Caden O'Rourke. They are only actively recruiting one of the guys mentioned for 2025: Nazareth's Gabe Kaminski. They also recruited legacy prospect Joseph Reiff for a bit, but he committed to Notre Dame pretty early. I had hope that Nathaniel Marshall from Fenwick, the No. 1-ranked prospect in Illinois, might be an academic fit, but apparently not.

Anyway, here's the item in his story:

ILLINOIS DEFENSIVE LINEMEN STANDING OUT AGAIN

There must be something in the water in Illinois that is helping to produce defensive linemen. Last cycle the state produced a pair of five-stars with Justin Scott and Marquise Lightfoot. Both took their talents to Miami.

This cycle, Nathaniel Marshall, Christopher Burgess Jr. and Iose Epenesa all have five-star potential. Jaylen Williams, Joseph Reiff, Gabe Kaminski and Jason Dowell are all four-star prospects.

If your program needs defensive linemen you should be stopping in Illinois.

Would you trade your foot or knee to bring Nicholson or Berry back?

I was thinking about the ultimate diehard fan test: would you “take the injury” to get our injured players back if you could?

Meaning you’d have a broken foot and your own recovery timeline but Nicholson would be back for MSU. Or, you’d have a torn meniscus and have to go through surgery and everything but we’d get Berry back.

Would you do it? Keep in mind: before the slew of injuries, we were dreaming of a Sweet 16 appearance.

+/- for the Eye-gouging by Iowa

Well, that was a tough one... playing Iowa without enough scoring options... and then losing our presence in the paint...
Here's how it looked statistically...

PlayerMinutesNU PtsIowa PtsRaw +/-Player +/-Game +/-
Buie398087-7+9.93+8.53
Smith, Blake295660-4+2.69+1.89
Nicholson173633+3+0.23+0.83
Barnhizer408087-7+1.56+0.16
Mullins0.102-2+0-0.40
Martinelli408087-7-2.75-4.15
Hunger13.52430-6-4.79-5.99
Clayton122427-3-6.24-6.84

A couple of positives... Buie played great and shot the lights out. Star of the game for sure... but that wasn't enough.
Blake Smith put up a good game. His steady play has been startling for a very inexperienced guy recruited by no one out of high school.

The flipside is the play of Luke Hunger and Jordan Clayton, who combined for 0 for 5 from the floor and just didn't add a lot to the team effort.
Martinelli and Barnhizer played the full 40 minutes.

After Nicholson took a bad step and injured himself, NU faced the unpleasant challenge of having no size advantage at any position.
The difference was fairly immediate and fairly obvious as Iowa scored 43 points in 17 minutes after Nicholson left the game.
Iowa was 2 for 5 from outside the arc over that 17 minute period, shifting their focus to all-out attacks in the paint.

With Berry and Nicholson apparently out for the season, there are not a lot of numbers to form projections...

NU has been outscored 187-153 with Jordan Clayton on the court for 102.5 minutes.
NU has outscored our opponents 152-144 with Blake Smith on the court for 83.6 minutes.
Unfortunately he was +17 with Nicholson and -9 with Hunger or Preston.

There are some other rays of hope... if Langborg is healthy...
Hunger/Martinelli/Barnhizer/Buie/Langborg is 90-79 in about 44 minutes.
Preston/Martinelli/Barnhizer/Buie/Langborg is 45-42 in about 23.5 minutes.

otherwise we've got
Preston/Martinelli/Barnhizer/Buie/Smith ahead 16-15 in just under 7 minutes.
Hunger/Martinelli/Barnhizer/Buie/Smith trailing 41-32 in just under 19 minutes.

Mullins has the athleticism to (maybe) have a productive game. I'm not confident that Clayton can say the same right now.

Resetting expectations - if Matt is out for the season

Absolutely brutal luck for us right now.

1) If Matt is out, making the tourney (via one more win) is considered a successful season versus making the second weekend prior to Ty being hurt.

2) Langborg needs to suck it up and get his butt back in the lineup. Even if he’s just a decoy and/or can only spot up. We need one more to secure our bid.

3) Luke Hunger needs to man up as well. He is incredibly soft for a guy his size.

I was proud as hell by the fight today but we have not clinched a damn thing yet. Keep punching! Rest up and get ready for MSU. I believe in these guys.

OT: Pretty good read on the evolving role of the G-League as NBA developmental pipeline

Thesis: It’s more important than it used to be. No mention of Audige tho.

Why isn’t NU….

…auctioning off stuff from the stadium?

We took the kids to walk around the stadium. Every single banner (including bowl games), section signs, lettering, etc. is still up

Why not auction that off, like they did with the patriotic jerseys a few years ago?

My wife thought the “N” in Ryan Field would be worth a ton of money alone.

I’d happily pay a few grand for random NU stuff from the stadium to hang in my office or basement
